Poetry Corner: Enough

The goat-girl was bleating, in her usual style
Whining and complaining, stream of words long as a mile
Guarf heard it all before, and saw her in her snit
And went out to gather more for her, to soothe her hissy fit
He searched over the mountains, and deep in the caves
For the things that she wanted, she’d become enslaved
She was never satisfied, and worsened her depression
Like a nagging old hag, the criticisms never lessened
Finally he snapped, he could take it no more
He yelled, “What do you want!? What is all this for?”
I’ve given you dragons, I’ve handed you drakes
You’ve won every battle, and dined on mage cakes
To the apex you’ve been, and the depths below
Drank glowing moonlight, putting on quite a show
Gifts of gold, and enough mounts to hurt
So your precious little hooves never touched dirt
You’ve been lifted on clouds, pulled from dangers galore
Goblins are kind to you, and even Orcs, well you they adore
You’ve charmed all the knights, and practiced every fight
And I’ll just tell you one time more:
Enough is enough, you ungrateful wench
Enough is enough, quiet or you’ll get such a pinch
The shaman looked moody, angry, protesting
Who did this Dwarf think he was, proselytizing?
Makaoka had never heard the Guarf speak to her thus
She was angry, and he was making all the fuss
She opened her mouth and gasped, like a fat old fish
Then shut up for once, which was his wish
Enough is enough, you ungrateful wench
Enough is enough, quiet or you’ll get such a pinch
His nose crinkled up red, and his blue eyes blazed
The annoyance was clear, he seemed somewhat crazed
Then softened when he saw she was beginning to cry
He’d said his peace, let bygones get by…
He turned on his heel to give her time to think
Any more bitching on her part would raise up the stink
Into the evening, into the night
She heard his words ringing
And they gave her a fright
Enough is enough, you ungrateful wench
Enough is enough, quiet or you’ll get such a pinch
And of all of her things, her possessions, she did prize
There was one above all with love, filled her eyes
Get out, get out --Out to the stable
With magic and ease, produced her faithful talbuk
The blessing of simply being able
Went for a midnight ride, out of the mud and muck
She rode to a place of peace and quiet
And thought about his words, relieved not to hide it
Enough is enough, you ungrateful wench
Enough is enough, quiet or you’ll get such a pinch
She rode back home, and knew all was safe
Knowing she could save face
Guarf left a note, some cookies, and tea
The note said, “Be grateful child, and just let it be.”
She knew he meant well, and was right as rain
Even if his honesty caused her some pain
Sometimes we are spoiled
With all that we own
Like a snake that is coiled
Kills us slowly, heart of stone
 Be humble and grateful
For the gifts you’re bestowed
And remember in life
There is not a thing you are owed.

Editor's Note: Thank you to Guarf for relinquishing his character to me until such other time he needs himself back. No dwarfs were harmed writing this poetry.

  1. LOL! I loved that. That Guarf really knows how to threaten. Goat Girl will behave I'll bet for fear of that pinch.
